growth chamber

We at FDM - Environment Makers have recently built a Growth Chamber specialized in the propagation and growth of arboreal crops for the laboratories of the University of Turin.

In the following article, we will explain what growth chambers are in general and analyze in detail the specifics of this suitably modified growth chamber for the propagation and growth of tree crops.

What is a Growth Chamber

The growth chamber is a particular type of climatic chamber built for the cultivation of vegetables, such as plants and seeds, and small living organisms such as insects and bacterial cultures.

Like all climatic chambers, it allows you to adjust the temperature and the humidity rate inside the rooms in order to influence the various stages of development of the organisms under study. In addition to the standard climatic chambers, however, the growth chambers are equipped with a lighting system that simulates the effect of solar exposure.

The lighting can be vertical or horizontal and can be obtained using neon, LED or UV lamps, depending on specific needs.

What is a Growth Chamber for Tree Crops used for?

A growth chamber for the propagation and growth of arboreal crops is a laboratory instrument built specifically for the study of plant development.

This type of chamber is mostly used in universities and research institutes to conduct experiments in applied botany.

Far from having a mere theoretical value, applied botany has already proved essential throughout history in at least two fundamental fields for the life of all of us: medicine and agriculture.

The study of plants, and of the active ingredients contained therein, has led to the development of drugs both entirely natural ones and ones complemented with synthetic elements.

As for agriculture, applied botany is called upon to respond to one of the fundamental challenges of our century: how to feed a constantly growing world population.

Thanks to reproducible experiments in a Growth Chamber for Arboreal Crops, it is possible to approach the most effective way possible to cultivate the land. Specifically, the growth chamber that FDM - Environment Makers built for the University of Turin, will be used for the study of fruit plants.

The FDM Growth Chamber for the Propagation and Growth of Arboeral Crops

The growth chamber for the propagation and growth of arboreal crops that we built for the University of Turin develops vertically and is equipped with three horizontal shelves for the cultivation of fruit plants that can be positioned at different heights.

The main change compared to a standard growth chamber is the lighting. This growth chamber for tree culture mounts six pairs of vertical LEDs, three on each side, which cover the entire height of the chamber. The LEDs can also change colour to simulate the effect of the entire spectrum of light in order to stimulate crops with different frequencies.

In addition, the range of humidity that the chamber can reach has been increased from 80% to 90% because some fruit plants require values close to saturation to obtain satisfactory results.

In this, as in other cases, FDM worked on a customized project to meet the customer's necessities. If you want a climatic chamber redesigned according to your needs, do not hesitate to contact us.
