The history of the ASTM Standards dates back to the end of the nineteenth century, when a group of engineers and scientists led by Charles Benjamin Dudley, then responsible for quality control at the Pennsylvania Railroad, became aware of the increasingly frequent railway accidents they had to do with the fragility of the tracks and proposed to introduce precise quality standards that manufacturers would have to respect.

Thus, in 1902, the American Society for Testing and Materials was born, which changed its name in the 1960s, leaving only the acronym.
