What is a climatic chamber?

The climatic chamber is a laboratory tool used to test the reactions of different types of materials under certain environmental conditions.

The climatic chambers can be built in various sizes depending on the intended use and equipped with different technologies to increase the types of tests that can be conducted.

All climatic chambers are isolated environments in which it is possible to alter the temperature and the humidity rate within certain ranges, reaching extreme values too.

Moreover, additional atmospheric conditions such as various types of precipitation and prolonged exposure to sunlight can be simulated in the climatic chambers.

What materials are tested in the climatic chamber?

Nowadays, a wide range of materials, organic and inorganic, is tested in the climatic chamber before being put on the market or used in its intended use.

All building materials are subjected to a rigorous series of tests before being used in the construction of buildings in our cities. The same applies to electronic components used in the automotive, aerospace engineering or consumer electronics sectors.

Medicines, cosmetics and food products have their own specific trials to ensure the stability of the compounds and verify the longevity of the products.

Finally, even clothes, especially technical clothing that must withstand extreme environmental conditions, are put to the test in the climatic chamber.

Who Should Use a Climate Chamber for Materials Testing?

It follows that all producers in the above-mentioned sectors need to equip themselves with a climatic chamber to ensure certain standards for their products.

These standards are regulated by a series of international bodies that legislate on the conditions that each material must meet in order to be considered approved.

Among the most important is the International Organization for Standardization, often abbreviated to ISO, which covers a wide range of materials and is globally recognized. Although many of its standards are defined in collaboration with the ISO, the International Electrotechnical Commission, abbreviated to IEC, is the body dedicated to regulating the electronics sector. The foodstuffs follow the directives of the HACCP.

More generally, each product o be put on the market must comply with specific homologation standards that require a climatic stress test.
