military personnel near decompression chamber

There are such useful technologies that they can be used for completely different purposes and are therefore even known by different names.

The case we will face today is that of the decompression chamber, also known as the diving chamber or hyperbaric chamber, a particular instrument that can be encountered both in a hospital and in a US Navy barracks.

What is the Decompression Chamber?

Unlike most climatic chambers meant primarily for materials testing, the decompression chamber is meant solely for humans and is technically referred to as a walk-in chamber.

It was developed in the early twentieth century thanks to the efforts of various submarine engineers from different countries. Its first field of employment was, in fact, submarine navigation and for this reason is also known as the diving chamber. As is known, the human body struggles to withstand the sudden and progressive changes in pressure caused by too rapid a dive at high depths.

This can cause various discomforts including true "decompression sickness". Thanks to the diving chamber, divers can be treated and re-established directly on the underwater vehicle.

How is the decompression chamber made and how does it work?

The decompression chambers can be of various sizes but all spacious enough to accommodate at least one person. They usually appear as large metal cylinders built to be resistant to medium or high pressures, depending on the type.

The environment is sealed by hermetic doors and connected to cylinders of breathable compressed air and oxygen and possibly other gases that are introduced in order to produce an atmosphere different from the external one.

Inside the decompression tank, significantly higher pressure levels are generated than those outside and for this reason, it is also called the hyperbaric chamber.

The Hyperbaric Chamber for Medical Use

The hyperbaric chamber is actually the name conventionally assumed by the decompression and diving chambers when used in the medical field. The technology is identical although its appearance can change to adapt it to use.

The hyperbaric chamber is present in many hospitals and clinics, fulfilling various therapeutic functions.

The so-called hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which is the treatment inside the hyperbaric chamber, is prescribed for a number of conditions including decompression accidents, arterial embolisms, crush injuries and fractures at risk.

Some hyperbaric chambers are for individual treatment while others are actual rooms used as an operating areas for surgical intervention in the safest possible way.
